IT bloke gave me an unwanted Vodafone dongle, which unlike one other dongle I've been using, didn't work so he messed around with my laptop and changed some settings. It's now taking 30 to 45 seconds for Mozilla to open up when I'm on wi-fi. How do I restore all the settings to before the mess-up?

Assuming XP, start programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

Can you not change user and log in as Administrator? It's possible System Restore points are there, but you can't get at them. Before you do anything else, you should try to get Admin permissions reenabled and create a new restore point.

Running wi-fi from a dongle can be a slow experience. Is it just Firefox that is slow? Have you tried another browser?

Firefox was slow to open at home using our BT Homehub wi-fi where it has always been perfect until now. I thought this might be something to do with whatever he changed when trying to get the new Vodafone dongle to work.

As I understand it the dongle uses GPRS not wi-fi.

I have removed and reloaded Firefox and will test it at home this evening. It's nothing serious, just an irritant but I do like to ensure the laptop is working autonomously to try to avoid problems when using it at hotels in Africa.

Sorry - my fault for not thinking.

Mobile dongles that I've used in the past have always seemed slow to me, but perhaps I'm just used to hard-wired connections.
