They're great for those of us who refuse to join F------k.

Another forum I belong to has all but expired because its 'membership' is predominantly younger, and (I think) have steadily migrated to F------k as an alternative.

…but that's a whole new discussion in itself.

Fora are also good (this one as an example) if the spam is properly controlled and arrested by whatever means are available.

I suppose I should have split up the OP question:

1. How valuable are cycling forums?
2. How valuable are non-cycling forums?

There is logic behind this apparent rambling ......

It's a bit more complicated than that...

That's a bizarre distinction. The value of a forum doesn't reside in its subject. You might as well as "how valuable are blue forums" and "how valuable are non-blue forums".

If you have a private agenda, come out with it. If the target of your agenda doesn't respond, please drop it for all our sakes before the poison infects the whole place.

No matter. Forget it.

Oh well, to say that is to invite suspicion I suppose. OK then. Your guesses are wrong. I have something weighing on my mind, something which worries me a lot. It's got nothing to do with cyclechat, nor any other cycling forum. There is no 'target'. Enough said?

Back to the value of forums.

I really like the new 'Rider's Tales' section. It'll take time, but I'm working my way through all the threads on there. They tend to come out a bit like blogs, but not really blogs, they're more about happenings than personalities. A good read anyway, and a good idea to make this into forum format. Indeed I'm rather itching to start up another thread on there, myself: I have the material. But I don't have the chutzpah to be the first person to start two threads in that section. My literary abilities ain't good enough. Let someone else be first.

Cyclechat and it's like are fun, better than watching rubbish TV, sometimes informative, sometimes silly.

For me cycling is a combination of enjoyable exercise and outings with basic transport, so cc's fine - just right.

The purely technical are very useful, not all that entertaining, and tend to have mods who complain if your posts aren't writen in totally serious and totally lifeless language.

Overall - a good invention but not to be taken too seriously.

I think subject specialist forums are good and I only use those myself to research and learn from.

I used to be active on a couple of forums that were non subject specific and ended up leaving and deleting all my posts as they were rapidly developing into cliquey, sniping, backstabbing groups of disturbed people who would actively encourage the more vulnerable members to bend to their way of thinking even if it wasn't for the best. They also decended in to racist and sexist banter as the norm for conversation.
