I have a gel-filled saddle-cover. I never see them mentioned on here so I suspect they are not considered "serious kit"! But I need to wear normal clothes to commute so I didn't want to wear the padded shorts. I probably would if I was into doing long rides for the sake of long rides, which I don't seem to have time for!

Anyway, hello!!

I don't get this idea that you're not a proper cyclist if you don't have the preferred kit  in my view if you ride a bicycle in a decent manor (i.e not on pavements and keep within the law) then you're okay with me!

Ta! I think of myself as a serious cyclist, but not a sporty one. I do think there is "serious kit" which enhances performance in a sporty way. So, I may not wear serious kit on the whole, but I do call myself a cyclist! And deffo no pavements or rlj-ing!

There you go steven martin - an introduction to cycling debate already!

Mostly they're not mentioned on here because people find them horrible. They chafe worse than a saddle with thick padding on longer rides (and saddles with thick padding aren't nice on long rides anyway).

If it works for you that's absolutely fine. But it's not something I would personally recommend to anyone.

oh I totally agree, I commute through London and do have some kit which suits my riding but if I'm honest I'm a sucker for a bargain lol, tight some might say but I like it that way

Hi and :welcome:
Now this may sound odd but the less padding you have the better, if you use too much you will shift around more on the saddle and get sore quite quickly, it all comes down to using the bike and getting your sit bones used to being on a harder saddle, it normally takes around 2 weeks, but definitely worth the soreness as you will be very comfy on a narrow, hard saddle in the long run.

Ah. Short commutes y'see. Never really cycle more than 10 miles at a time, usually more like 4 there and (hours later) 4 back.

I have a degree in the Art Of The Sore Arse. Best to man up and tough it out as it will get easier through time.
