Diabolical due to injury and other health problems, I need to do 36.57 miles to complete my 1000 miles for the year

Bit up and down for me this year. I started in Jan on an RRTY but was ill in Feb. Restarted March and ill again in April. My focus changed to a 5 day tour in the S of France. Then weather and stuff limited my riding a bit as I never felt strong enough to have a go at the harder rides I like to do in the summer. Made some new friends over in the Evesham Wheelers and in the local CTC group. Had a good trip to the Sierra Nevada in Oct which temporarily provided some sun and reaquainted me with saddle bag touring. Since then been ticking over until the recent bug stopped me. 175 miles short of 8000. It was a shoe in until the bug.......

Numbnuts - get those 30 odd ridden!!!!!

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
Highlight - Trip along the Loire valley from Nantes to Orleans in August.

Lowlight - The lack of any decent weather this year in my area. Despite being out of work for a few months, my mileage is down compared to last year, and my weight is up by half a stone!

Back in January I optimistically planned on doing 2400 miles for the Year. I was going from twice a week and hating it, to three times a week. I then found Strava, and the game changed. I went mad and started racing myself. Suddenly from three to four days a week and within a few weeks of doing four I was cycling in every day, and loving it.
3400 miles by the end of the year :bicycle:
Next year’s target is 4000miles:sweat:

Very good in some sense, not so good in others. January/Feb started well, but then as Uni work got in the way I barely cycled up until about May. Then over the summer I had quite a few leisurely cycles around my area until September when I decided to go on my first 'tour'. Absolutely brilliant in that respect and I will be going somewhere next year. Since I came back I've hardly cycled again because I've gotten back into rugby and started rowing, which takes up every evening of the week so I don't really have time

Here for rides.
Let's see...

Hit the Highlands with Ken and Kenny, headbutted Buckinghamshire, and broke my thumb, rode LonJoG with The Fridays lovelies; a real life changer, did a few FNRttCs inc. one on a Brompton and one on a fixed, and a couple of rides home, did Cardiff-Swansea for a bit of international flavour, rode a trans-cambrian off road, visited some trial centres, commuted to work a lot, saw an osprey, chased Ross across Yorkshire, fell off for no good reason on road three times, fell off for no good reason off-road countless times, led an informal forum ride, almost had a fight with a fellow cyclist in London, had handbags with an Audi driver in Sussex, ate a curry, drank some beers, sold two bikes, bought a full-boinger, dislocated a shoulder, laughed a lot, cried a bit esp when putting the shoulder back in, made some new friends, increased in my admiration and respect for the existing ones. Developed a crush on Emma Pooley. Watched some mod win a gold medal and a yellow jersey.

I can't remember many of the miles, the places and the sights. I can, and I hope will forever, remember the people.

As my cycling years go I'd give 2012 about 13.5/10.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Bit of a slow year for me , what with a new baby at the start of the year my targets have been lowered as i just have not had time to get out at much apart from commuting .
Lost a fair bit of weight the last 6 months and even though i have not done much riding i am flying up hills !

Not got the miles I wanted - was on target for about 5000, but lost 4 weeks with my 'iccle op in October, and since not hit the miles much

That said, my shoulder is vastly improved and it's not gone downhill again this winter - took over a year for the shoulder to settle after a decompression op, and final treatment of trigger points with steriods last Feb did the trick. A holiday in the sun also helped !

Not fell off again though ! Next year should be much better, all 4 bikes are running sweet - a few upgrades during the year, new wheels and stoopid mad lights for the MTB, built my second set of wheels for the fixed, and they have stayed true since (yay). Bought a wheel jig, love it.

Now got two garmins ! And we have a cyclist's cafe in the village so hope to pop out on some of their weekend rides !

Great:
See my sig line, but also PBs on all of my three main routes into work.

This year has been another of those years when I look back at what I have done, and can hardly believe it. I'm an unexceptional 40s male and am now doing things that make people stop and ask me to repeat what I have just said. And it doesn't seem that extraordinary to me. I'm now looking at things like Fred Whitton Sportive and Mount Ventoux and thinking when I should be trying these things. This time last year it was "if" rather than "when", and the year before "not for me".

Not led any social rides this year. Maybe next?

About 400 short of my 5,000 mile target, mostly down due to back problems earlier in the year, and was intending to play catch up over Christmas but now have the cold:surrender:

My year didn't start until the 19th March, so it's not over yet, but thus far it has been good.

Bought two new bikes.

Ridden four Sportives,

Toured from Reading to Bath along the Kennett and Avon canal, then cross country back to Bicester.

350 miles riding along and around the Canal du Midi

And thus far have cycled 3500 odd miles since 19th March.

Oh and I have lost two stone, if anyone finds it you can keep it.

Highlights:
Just being on my bike both commuting and leisure.
Another 10,000 miles reached for the year (4th year in a row)
Cycling to watch both the Olympic Road Race and The Tour Of Britain. In both instances the atmosphere was amazing. Sometimes this country can do things right.
The century ride a month challenge (still ongoing as I have Decembers to do)
26 Imperial Century rides (a couple more to be added before year end)
39 Metric Century rides (more to be added before year end)
12 FNRttC & 12 SMRbtH's.
2 new bikes (Kona Honky for the commute and a Van Nicholas Ventus for leisure rides)
Seeing @Mista Preston come of cycling age.
Seeing the absolutely amazing transformation of @Sittingduck into a lean mean cycling machine.
Meeting Cycle Chatters that I haven't me before.
Mrs Ian for actively encouraging my cycling and never ever moaning when I want to go out on the bike, or when I unexpectedly bring cycling friends home or new bikes & bike spares/accessories that seem to turn up on a far too regular basis.
Seeing Ian Jnr master a balance bike at the age of 2 years old and seeing him seem to love his bike as much as I love mine.

Lowlights
Anything that keeps me off the bike for either commuting or leisure.
3 Weeks off the bike due to a knee injury
A nasty case of Shin Splint.
Not cycling anywhere near enough with good buddy @Arallsopp.
Seeing @Martint235 lose his cycling mojo.
Being knocked off by a Police Van
Being knocked off by a wayward Ped
Having to sell my recumbent

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Excellent, with a blip in the middle:
  • Started with a broken frame on my Ridgeback Platinum; Evans were brilliant with it.
  • Then a CC ColinJ ride
  • First Audax (Mini-NWP) not good; will be back in 2013 for NWP
  • Then a range of sportives - all good/great
  • C2C in Mid-April
  • Blip June/July with a knee injury from falling on Whernside whilst walking, which hit the amount of riding I could do.
  • Back to form August with Evans King of the Pennines
  • CC group on BHF Manchester-Blackpool and 1st Strava KOM
  • Etape Pennines / others in the autumn
  • Finally joining a club and getting a race licence sorted. Now to use it ...
  • Passing a full year of health tests, which I have to do regularly
  • Over 6500 miles ridden so far ...
  • Finished with 200th commute (today in the rain!)
Roll on 2013 ....
