maybe the reason he was head and shoulders above the competition is because he worked harder and longer than the rest ?

Not sure a knighthood at this early stage in his life is appropriate but I do wish armchair knockers who resent other's achievements through hard work and considerable sacrifice would get a life

deserving as he is, i'd prefer to see it awarded when he retires from competitive cycling, iirc kelly holmes was honoured upon retirement, or very close to it.

hoy still has 2012 to look to.

No disrespects to Chris Hoy at all, his was a phenomenal effort, but I have great difficulty accepting that any sports person should receive a gong of any kind for any sporting achievement. Their efforts get recognised by their sport, as they properly should, so why reward them again? It seems odd to me.

Now if such sports folk were active in their local community etc, promoting their sport to kids etc, or doing other such voluntary stuff without direct reward then that'd be a different story.

But then again, members of the business community appear to get rewarded for nothing more than making themselves wealthy so why not!

What about the mores sustained and longer career of Nicole Cooke?

The problem is that as a "golden boy" atthe moment this is eclipsing the carreers and achievements of many others.

It's what the media is doing and personally I'd rather see a cyclist, and one who looks like a thoroughly nice chap, getting the glory rather than football players for example. He can't choose whether or not he's the golden boy...let's just all enjoy it with him.

Fair point Cathryn. In fairness though, I don't think anyone's actually blaming Hoy, or being critical of him, for it all. But, yes, I agree; in the context of who does get this kind of recognition, better he than some others.

Oh I agree its great that a cyclist is in the lime light, and hopefully brings the sport and pastime to the front of everyones minds but not a knighthood please
