HP Laptop/Screen Problems

Anybody got an HP Laptop and had display problems?

When I lift the lid, the screen should come on, but instead it doesn't always or it flickers. I have to move the lid backwards and forwards until it finds a stable position and the display stays on. It must be a physical connection fault and doesn't always make a clean contact for the screen to stay on.

Has anybody had similar? Did you undo the screws and take it apart to look for a loose connection, or take it to be fixed somewhere? Was it easy/expensive?

Or is it time to upgrade to another laptop?

I've had that problem with an HP and a Samsung, in both cases it was the ribbon connector (base to screen) that had deteriorated, parts from Ebay and an easy fix.

My old work laptop did that from new. Everything would wake up when you opened the lid apart from the screen.

There are loads of disassembly vids on youtube - get one of your exact model number if you can; if that doesn't work, try looking for one that looks similar. They're mostly pretty similar, and as Mark F says, they're easily fixable.

It will be fixable. You can probably find instructions online. Here's one (a Dell laptop) that I fixed earlier...

PS I did buy a new laptop, but 18 months after doing the repair I still use the old one when doing a lot of typing because it has a vastly superior keyboard.
