I understand one of the good things about alfine hubs is that they enable you to shift whilst stationary, helping deal with issues where you find yourself having to stop without getting a chance to change down, then having to start again in too high a gear.

Now does the same apply to other hubs such as sturmey archers etc? Just I'm after a reasonably lightweight 3 or 5 speed setup.

Sturmey Archer definitely can. As all hub gears are based on the same mechanical principles (AFAIK), I'm sure they all can.

except for 2 gear systems that change gear when you brake.
which means you have to change up a gear before you stop.
otherwise you will start in high gear.

Thanks for the info! Just what I needed to hear. Although back pedalling might be a problem if I plan to go for a model with the elegance of coaster brakes...
