Is there any guide as too how often in terms of miles? Same for the back and the front wheels? I assume if you re-grease and change the bearings before any problem develops. The hubs I'm thinking of are Shimano XR.

No guide - if the seals have held up and the grease is still white I'd just pop the seal back.

I strip, clean and re-grease mine once a year when I swap over to the winter hack (about 5k miles). Seems about right for my wheels - there is always some grease left and I've never had to replace the bearings - five years old about 25k miles.

Obviously any sqeaks or if run under flood water they get an immediate strip.

Okay seems fairly simple. The wheels I'm thinking off could have done anythign between 12k and 20k, I'm not entirely sure (the speedo batteries run out about every 4k, so it's a multiple of that). They have also had a dose of flood water, but to no apparent ill-effect. Perhaps it's time I had a look.
