Hi

I have a really old (by modern standards) CRT TV - a Panasonic TX36 that looks a bit like this, but works fine:
http://www.englishforum.ch/attachments/free-stuff/18177d1282596572-now-free-panasonic-36-92cm-widescreen-crt-tv-luzern-img_2503.jpg

it's currently connected to a Sky+ HD Box, but now thinking of cancelling my subscription and getting a HUMAX freeview box.

Will the HUMAX box connect to the Sky satellite and work OK?
My TV has no HDMI connectors - only Scarts - will that be a problem?

Any advice welcome. Thanks

I think you can get a freesat card from Sky without havign to buy a HUMAX box. I believe its a nominal one-off cost (c£20) and it will enable you to get the freesat channels using the sky dish/sky+box. I don't know abuot still using the sky+ to record but given Sky a call and ask them. It would save the cost/bother of replacing your system.

Depends which Humax box you get.

I have just dumped sky and I will be getting this one -> CLICK ME it has both Scart and HDMI

You can just use your sky+ box once your subscription has expired it will just revert to more or less a Freesat Box, I think you can buy a Freesat card from sky to get the couple of extra channels you would miss out on as 0-markymark-0 has pointed out, but if you want to be able to record you will need to pay sky around £10 per month for this.

Thanks.
Apparently, if I cancel my subscription to Sky, I only get a handful of free-to-view channels via the skybox.

I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?

All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just £25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.

I did the same and just purchased the card from sky. I have not bothered about recording anything since ditching the video years ago and anything I missed I will either catch up on online on the BBC or ITV I players via my Nintendo Wii

I, OTOH, hardly ever watch anything that isn't recorded. I can't stand live commercial channels because about 1/3 of the time is taken up by intrusive, repetitive advertising. I record everything, watch it when I want, pause it when I want, and skip the adverts. Typically, I can watch a film occupying a 2 hour slot on a commercial channel in about 90 minutes.

That box is a Digital Receiver - it takes a signal from a TV Aerial and you get Freeview..

To connect with a satellite dish you need a Satellite Receiver and that gets you Freesat.

This is the Humax versionhttp://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/humax-foxsat-freesat-hd-receiver-00939292-pdt.html?srcid=867&cmpid=comp~Google~TV%2C+DVD+%26+Blu-ray~00939292&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=mrqqmwq&istBid=t

Just check that whatever box you get has 2 scart sockets and that will work with your TV - you won't get HD but something like the Humax gives a very good picture anyway.

If you want even more - Humax do a similar box with a Hard Drive so that you can record programs although I just use the above Humax with a separate DVD recorder and piggy back it through the scart system.
