Hybrid and road bikes

When I bought bikeafter > 20 years away from cycling, bought a hybrid, as I use the twopath a fair amount. (Also wanter more upright riding position and front shocks)
(When I bought that last bike MTB's had not even been heard of! It was (and is - very rusty) a Claud Butler usual sort for the time double butted Reynolds 531 tubing frame)

I used to use a Road bike years ago and still fin this a tad heavy though will not change it now. Was wondering about putting on thinner tyres (maybe going back to thicker ones in winter)

The bug has bitten me and there is no chance I will buy road bike but think a riad bike might have been a better choice.

Next purchase will be SPD shoes and pedals. I want to try shoes on, there is a shop about 10 mi away that is begging for a visit that should have enough to try

There is rusty and there is rusty. That steel road bike of yours might be a bit of a gem. If only various components are rusty or there is general surface rust, then there is something to be said for getting it clean and lubed and set up for a ride.

My favourite bicycle is a 25-year-old Claud Butler 531 double-butted road bike. It is set up as a fixed-gear now, but it remains a delight to ride and really not at all slow.

If the bug has bitten you and if the Claud Butler is the right size and in resporable condition, then it is worth the few quid to get it right.

Well I did have a look at it before deciding to get a new one.
However I am not sure I want that much work, I rejected the idea originally.
Also I consider frame size a little large for me, for what I want now.
Also it has of course the normal (for the time) 10 gears. However the smaller chain ring is quite small so gives some good hill gearing.
I would not know where to start
Would the chain need replacing? Is so what of the chain rings and rear sprockets. The wheels are still good and true and think the bottom bracket is OK. The gears do still change though and if cleaned would be acceptable
Saddle was not the one it was supplied with, I fitted an old type leather one, would want an modern style one more shaped to the male anatomy.
