Hybrid bike - will I regret buying one or do you love your hybrid?

I started off with a Kona Dew hybrid bike & loved it to bits. I'd still have it if some dozy mare hadn't pulled out in front of me. I'd never knock hybrid bikes personally.

My £350 boardman hybrid sport rides so nicely I'm going to upgrade it with an 11 speed groupset and hydraulic disc brakes. And drop handlebars :-D

(I bought a road bike 4 months after my hybrid, then a much nicer road bike 6 months after that. Would have been better going direct for a road bike but the boardman has done great service around London.)

I like the 29'er option better than the hybrid, and I've owned a lot of hybrids. I liked, among the hybrids I had, the Specialized Sirrus the most. It was light, a little more racy in its geometry, and a bit better handling than other hybrids I had. But I still prefer the Trek Marlin 29'er. I mainly use it as a winter bike.

Just goes to show buy the bike that suits you. Luckily there's loads of choice and hybrid essentially means diddly and can refer to anything that isn't an mtb or a drop bar. Even a 29er is a hybrid of sorts

What's the bike in your avatar, looks like an MTB? If so, why do you need a 29er?

my avatar is my current bike and it is a 26 inch Carrera. I bought it used and it is a little tired so it needs some money spending on it I was considering if putting that money towards a new bike might be a better option. I have had a long think and visited a couple of bike shops and a 29er is not what I want. I think I would like a bike that will be light weight and a little faster than my MTB on the mostly tarmac routes I use. Having said that my Carrera does do everything I need with the road tyres I have on it but there are a few options that will do it better.

the CX bikes I saw looked interesting but do they make good general purpose multi surface bikes or are they too focused on cx racing,

For now I am going to stick with the Carrera for another year at least whilst saving for my N+1 and then maybe treat myself to something nice

You might need to think a bit about the type of gearing you want.. Some hybrids have mtb running gear some have road gear I'm looking to get a hybrid soon but will opt for a road /hybrid for better speed.
But you can choose either of course..

Having trashed the forks and handlebars on my CX I have decided to rebuild it with flat bars, the short top tube (compared to a mountain bike) should make for a more upright position than what I am used to, a bit of an experiment realy.

Friend of mine just picked up one of these http://www.bikesheduk.com/specialized-sirrus-comp-2013

He's not too confident with drop bars, hence he went for the hybrid. He's genuinely over the moon with it. It's lighter than my road bike, and he took it on the Sunday club run and kept up no problem. He's not going to take it down the woods to test it as a mountain bike, but for a hybrid, it's perfect for him.
