Hi Ladies and Gents

Knowing that I'm into cycling, a friend has asked my advice re what Hybrid to buy for c£1,500 to £1,600. He has a very good moutntain bike, that he has owned for some years, but now he is a "little older" wishes to ride more quiet country lanes and trails etc.

As I own an exclusively Road/TT/Fixed stable, I really don't know what is best for him, and your suggestions would be gratefully received.

Not that many hybrids available for that sort of price. Cannondale Quick Carbon, if he can get one in the right size.

as a suggestion a CX bike might be a little bit more versatile but if hes happy with a more relaxed riding position then a hybrid is fine.

You dont need to spend over 1k to get a decent hybrid but if thats what he wants than a

Specialized Sirrus Comp 2016 or Cannondale Quick Carbon 1 2016 Hybrid Bike

On the lower end of the pricing scale: Felt Verza Speed 20

For me to throw over 1k at a bike i'd have to be pretty serious about cycling as a whole. Doing events like audax's, enduros or sportifs etc etc. You dont need to throw that much cash for a bike that does what the buy wants.

You're looking at Specialized Sirrus Carbon top of the shop Hybrids at that sort of price point. They are fine bikes, but Hybrids aren't everyone's cup of tea.

I was thinking that.

I find the position on my CAADX CX bike much more relaxed than that on my CAAD5 road bike and decent CX bikes such as the CAADX are available for under £1k.

I tend to think Cannondale's are over priced. £800 for a CAADX with Sora groupset and 1k for the same with a 105 groupset. good quality bikes though, but if you compare them to the likes of planet X customs & other such bikes, the same can be obtained for much less - only difference is the frame and paint work.

The Planet X pro carbon is pretty hard to beat, circa 900 notes with a full Ultegra 11 speed Groupset, and Campag wheelset. A colleague of mine bought one on the cycle to work scheme, he had it delivered to the factory, Yodel delivered it, and it wasn't broken:eek:. Full house I reckon.

I nearly bought a Planet X bike (LONDON ROAD) but managed to get a Tiagra-equipped CAAD X for under £600 on eBay and then upgraded it to suit my preferences.

They are currently £100-200 more than that. Probably not ideal for 'trails' either

If you think that companies like Cannondale make the same frames so people like Planet X can knock it out cheaper, you need to look harder. There's a reason why they're cheap.

Whyte Montpellier, or look at the £1k sterling alu but high spec

There used to be a carbon Boardman hybrid

And some hideous thing from Giant

Planet X do a carbon flat bar for under a grand

Or see what the likes of Condor or Pearson will build from one of their carbon road frames ( or even steel)

Also look at titanium, I'm sure someone will do you a super bike with flat bars

Vickster may possibly be referring to the Giant AnyRoad haha. This is the bike I am currently coveting myself after reading reviews and comparing it to similar bikes. The looks might not be to everyone's tastes but it has definitely grown on me. I particularly like the paint job on this particular model:
