Hi, i have not been cycling for quite a few years due to a recurring knee problem , i did a lot of road cycling and i am very familiar with that type of cycle . However having just had a operation on my knee my specialist as recomend i go back to cycling but in a lighter way so i am looking for a cycle that will bo ok on the canals toe paths but will be able to use on the roads as well, (commuting) Its been a while since i was in the market for a new cycle (or used) so i was hoping i could get a bit of advice from the forum on what type i should be looking at , i notice their is quite a few hybrids knocking about .Could anyone please help . Thanks ps Budget around £350/450

I'm a noviceand bought a mongoose at the bottom end of your budget and am really pleased with it. Most people will recommend going to your Local Bike Shop. That's obviously a good way to go but the problem I found was that many of them only sell a couple of makes. So if you go to LBS make sure they stock plenty of different makes so you get a better choice. There will be lots of recommendations from here and the advice on this site is usually pretty good, there are also lots of old threads on the same subject which are worth reading.

Thanks for the replys, specialized is looking like a good choice . Could someone also enlighten me on the gearing systems please. My road bike was 27 speed and i used the flight deck set up for changing gears . I would like this set up on a hybrid that is if you can get them within my budget on a hybrid . I have seen some of the specialized but they have revo shift . Any help would be apreciated . Thanks

Sorry just had a thought , i believe that i cannot use the flight deck set up due to type of handlebars . Could still do with a bit of info on the gear changing set up though .
