I'm new to this forum, but hope my recommendation is useful. I bought a Specialized Crosstrail Elite about four weeks ago. I use it for commuting to work two or three times a week. It’s an excellent all round bike, far quicker and lighter than the Trec I used to have. The lockable suspension is a very good feature. The brakes and gears seam to be very precise. The geometry of the bike is very good, I am about 5 11 although I had to move the set back a little.
I have done about 250 – 300 miles on it and am very please with it.

Hey Willow I have a Mongoose (Crossway 350) too, this is the first time I've seen anyone else admit to having one 
Had mine for just over a year, and my commute is 9 miles each way in London so its done a fair few miles. Its been a reliable workhorse, and although quite heavy due to the cromoloy frame and forks, it has been strong enough to survive a crash - knocked over by another cyclist from behind, he was swerving to avoid a black taxi that went too close.
One thing to note when you are paying lowish prices for bikes like £250-£400 is that the manufacturers make cost savings by using crappy saddles and pedals. So in the year I have had my bike I have changed these. Also changed the tyres to Shwalbe Marathons, had these for 6 months and they are puncture free so far.

I'll go against the grain and make an alternative suggestion. (Someone has too!).
I'd suggest looking at a quality nineties MTB without suspension. Some of these have very light high quality frames (~10kg for a Cannondale based on the CAAD 3 frame, for example). A change of tyres and fitting of some mudguards gives a very versatile all-round bike for much less cost.
There are plenty of little used examples about.
