Don't panic; I haven't fitted gears, I just went down a couple of teeth on the chainring.

I was quite surprised after commuting round Heathrow for a year or so (and gearing up accordingly) how much the short climbs were taking out of me. And the extra 5 miles each way, of course.

Anyway, it's taken the edge off those climbs and I'm now accelerating uphill like I used to!

I thought I might get used to the higher gear but I guess I'm not as young as I was (47 in Feb)...

Always run your gearing for your area nothing defeatist about that! I started out with 48x18 but it was just a tad stern for hilly Lakeland 48X19 suits much better.

You live near me, and London gearing won't help. 46 x16 or 77/78 inch is useable round here, but I avoid the really steep stuff. Upto 1 in 10 is OKish.
