I am an idiot who deserves to have his bike stolen

I have done much the same only instead of leaving the shed door open I left it locked but left the key in the lock as well. It was like that for a good 48 hours as we were away for the weekend. Nothing touched but we live in a nice area - mostly. I do feel that we were very lucky though, very lucky indeed.

I once had a Fiat 126 stolen. The local constabulary correctly predicted where I'd find it and when I reached it, it had two pints of milk and half a dozen eggs in the passenger footwell instantly doubling the value of the car.
Only a couple of days after buying it, I left my (very first) car outside the house, with both windows wound down, as it was a hot day. Mindset you, it was back in 1994, & a Chevette..........
(they were stillin production, just, at at point)

I came home one day and the back gate was wide open and so was the front door. I walked in thinking somebody was in but no, nobody was in. Apparently, my wife had gone to work and just walked out, doors wide open. Nothing was missing, maybe they thought somebody was in as it was so insecure or, there was nothing worth stealing.

When I bought this house, the outgoing owner told me that the back door catch and lock were a bit iffy, and to watch that I didn't lock the lock with the door off the catch. This would be a big deal because these houses do not have gardens. My door opens to a small yard with a low wall, and there is not even a gate. Anybody walking down the backstreet gets a good look at the door and is only a few paces from it.

'Yeah, right ...' thought I, 'You would have to be a total idiot to lock the door without making sure that it was properly closed!'

A few days later, I got back from a 12 hour shift at work to find my back door wide open, with the lock locked!:blush:

PS I suppose that we are bound to repeat ourselves on CC as the years pass - I just discovered my story in the thread that colly linked to!

What's your address? I'm sure a few on here will be willing to alleviate you of your fleet of bikes?
You were unbelievably lucky but I guess that can't last forever!

The amount of times I've seen people have locked a d-lock to just the sheffield stand and left their bike freestanding shows how a lot of people are in a rush or half paying attention!

similar to Colin: The house in question is an end terrace on a steep hill with the back clearly visible down the hill.

I got back home after a couple of hours away to find my next door neighbour sat in the lounge watching TV with a brew in hand. I'd taken my back door off the hinges, found one cracked and gone out to get a new one, decided to run another couple of errands, totally forgetting the back door was lying in the yard. Neighbour had been walking up the hill from work, spotted my stupidity, hopped over the yard wall propped my door against the frame & sat in my house in case anyone else noticed it was insecure. I kept him in beer for weeks after.

i once left my phone in the car and went to watch a rugby match. I realised walking back to the car that i didnt have my phone, remembering i had left it on the passenger seat! Doh

I returned to the car and saw that there was no glass in the passenger side window, my immediate thought, its been put through and stolen, then i noticed there was no glass anywhere, i couldnt understand why for a brief second and then saw my phone? I then realised i had also left the passenger window open all this time with the phone on the seat and nobody had noticed or touched it ! I never did tell the wife, it was her car and im always moaning at her for not locking it

I once left my car, garage and house keys on top my car, in my driveway for 5 hours before! Didn't realize until I got home and saw them!
Same here - but I left mine in my car door while I spent a week cycling in Spain.
Took me ages to get in, looking through all the places in the garden where I might have hidden them.

I've done a lot of the things listed already...

Locked the bike up in the town centre and left it for half an hour or more with the key still in the lock on more than one occasion.
Left the back door to the house unlocked or open all night
Left the front door to the house unlocked all night
Had the milkman post the house keys through the letter box when I left them in the lock one night

I was stone cold sober every time. Thankfully nothing has ever been nicked so I either live in a good area or I've got bu**er all worth stealing (none of the bikes are BSO mountain bikes so of no interest to the local yoof).

I noticed that my backdoor handle was stuck in the down position the other morning. It is possible that I left it in that position, but maybe somebody goes around during the night checking to see if backdoors are locked ...?

I thought about leaving a coin balanced on the handle at night so the next morning I could tell if somebody had tried to open the door. I decided not to, because if I found out the coin had been dislodged, I'd be lying awake every night trying to catch them at it!
