Hello everyone.

hope you are well.

I am looking to buy a new flat bar road bike for around town.

I have been cycling for years but always buying second hand bikes.

I live in Edinburgh so its hilly.

I am not worried about speed.

Its for a commute mainly and getting around.

Budget 200 -300 pounds.

I am not a great mechanic so reliability would be great.

I am 5 ft 8 if that makes a difference.

Thanks very much for any help.

You could probably get a used rigid fork Boardman hybrid for around £300 or similar (look at the Whyte fast flat bar R7 range too)

you won’t get anything decent new especially with bike stocks low

Avoid anything with suspension

what did you have before?

5’8 probably looking for a medium sized bike

You won’t get much new for that budget, best to go used again. A quick search of gumtree around Edinburgh revealed a bunch of hybrids.
This Pinnacle is bang in the middle of your budget should fit you and looks rather nice:

Also comes with a pump and padlock, pretty much essential for your location. You need to check out secondhand bikes carefully.

Edit: Looking on Evans site they have a basic Lithium for £300 but it only has a 1x chainring ( not good for steep hills) and V rim brakes:

good advice cycleops, but nothing wrong with V rim brakes. Little to go wrong, easy maintenance.

Thanks for your help. I may indeed need to go up in budget. My pedal just fell of my current bike. It may be time to invest in a decent bike.
