I am the destroyer of bikes...

Just before Christmas I received my Ribble winter bike (after many delays I might add). Brilliant. I could keep my Go Faster (TM) bike for the good weather days and the Ribble will keep me going through the winter.

Of course, having three young kids, and being busy at work, I tend not to have too much time (virtually none) to look after the bike, apart from the odd wipe and oil (and swapping brake pads of course!).

So with this in mind, here is what I have had repaired replaced since December 2009 (I pick the bike up from the LBS later today.

A rear hanger, 1 rear mech, 2 lots of brake pads, a chain, a cassette, a rear hub, and front and back rims (actually I'm getting some hand built - cheapish - new wheels).

Hmm. I am the destroyer of bikes!

(Please note that this bike is ridden in all weathers, and this included temperatures or -15C, which meant significant amounts of road salt were ingested by the bikes mechanicals. Also this summer has been a bit of damp squib, apart from June, so it has been out most days, most of which have been wet. On the plus side, my good bike is still in excellent condition!)

Woow. I'm about to put mine in for a big service. I know I need some new stuff, mainly down to near 4,000 miles of use though.

I reckon I have ridden about 125 days since i got it. I ride about 22 miles a day, so that's about 2750 miles.

I can understand the other stuff being replaced but the rims?

Aye the rear was pretty bad, apparently, and I trust them. I think it was a particularly gritty winter with all of the salt and stones (there were places where they used small stones instead of salt), up here. Of course, my lack of maintenance might have had something to do with it....

Not to mention ploughing through that cratered moon surface that you call roads ;)

I think you are going to have to find more time for cleaning!

Or get a new bike with a Reynolds 831 frame, disk brakes, hub gears and a carbon chain!

Humm... I've just put an order in for one of those Ribbles.

I guess that, on the bright side, pretty much all the stuff you listed is general wear and tear.

Sounds like normal wear and tear...........

On my fixed I've replaced......in 12 months

2 x chain £26
1 x rear sprocket £15
1 x set rear cartridge bearings £12
2 x brake pads £20
1 x rebuilt rear wheel (rim worn but bent by pot holes) £89
1 x bar tape £10
2 x tubes £12
1 x tyre £35

About £219

You aren't doing too bad then !!!!

Blimey! I'll admit to neglecting my Trek 1000 winter bike, currently in the garage still coated in last winter's shite, but despite the exclusively wet, muddy mileage, I think all is well beneath the cack.
Either way, it's worth it to keep your 'dress' bike in good fettle. Whilst I'll happily race in summer rain on my Madone or Litespeed TT bike, they're otherwise reserved for sunny days. Preferably in the Alps.

The hanger was because of a bash on the side of the bike. The rear mech just gave up after 3 months. It was a very unusual 3 months of weather, but I was still surprised.

The hub very recently started making a grinding noise (that's what convinced me it was time for a service!!). Probably water/muck penetration. I just need to make sure the wife doesn't find out the cost...!

My replace list so far: (since getting the bike 6 months ago)

Alex rims+Shimano hubs replaced by campagnolo fulcrum 7s
Shimano tiagra shifters replaced by campy xenon
Shimano ultegra rear mech replaced by xenon rear mech (and then had to buy a new one as i snapped the 1st xenon mech I had!!!)
new campy chain / cassette
new saddle (san marco gel thing)
more bar tape
new set of cables
4 packs of puncture kits (each containing about 6 patches) - still on the original tubes!!!
Mitchelin Speedium 2 tyres - (not a puncture since i got these to replace the Ha£$fords tyres -grrrr!!!)

i dread to think what i could have bought if i'd just gone straight for my current setup..
