Actually it isn't illegal - sorry to spoil your party!

There are a very few places in Britain where there are special bye-laws which apply speed limits to bicycles (some royal parks, Hove promenade, possibly one or two others) but in general speed limits apply only to motor vehicles.

What Simon says... in general speed limits apply to motorised vehicles, not pedal cycles. That said, it's not a responsible thing to do..

You don't actually know that you were exceeding the speed limit. There is an error in all devices. If a car acting within the designed boundaries did that speed it would not get a ticket.
