Starting next Wednesday I'll be running the four week 'Basic Cycle Maintenance & Repair' evening course at Eastleigh College.
I can now add 'college tutor' to my CV (if I ever do a CV).

Hmmm... you can scrub that; I went for the interview yesterday and they phoned this afternoon offering me the job saying the pay would be between £18 and £28 per hour and they'd e mail the offer letter, which I've just had.
So it's £18 p/h on PAYE (I can't do it on a self employed basis apparently) and they'll charge me £59 to process my DBS clearance (I've already got two), I wasn't that bothered about the pay but I'd end up with about 40 quid for probably 12 hours work (I'd be planning the lessons, supplying the tools and providing student notes in addition to actually running the two hour evening class) which I feel is a bit of a piss take. Plus, as I couldn't find my 39 year old maths & English O level certificates I'd have to go and do a maths & English test.
Hence I've decided to decline.

Why the DBS checks? Will they be leaving you unattended with children or vulnerable people?

A DBS is required in all colleges and schools. All colleges are on cut backs now due to the Government reducing their budgets. The one I work for ask for voluntary redundancies every year. I have been turned down in the last two years as apparently, they still need me. I have asked again this year and hope I will get it this time. Wish me luck.

I appreciate they might require one, but I couldn't understand the purpose for evening classes, where our chap was unlikely to have unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable people.
Just because they require one, doesn't mean there's any logic behind it.
Edit - just asked my missus who runs a children's charity, and who went through all the rigmarole just a few days ago. According to the eligibility list she printed from gov.UK there's no automatic requirement for someone solely teaching adults, except vulnerable adults as defined in Schedule 2 part 4 of their guidance. He's not automatically eligible for any level of disclosure in the role as described in the OP, and the application may well have been rejected.

A few years ago, we won a HMG-funded contract to do with energy use in homes. It involved making a survey of the buildings, reading meters, crawling around in lofts, and going through a brief questionnaire with the householders. At one of the first meetings with HMG's representatives' it was suggested that we should have CRB checks to ensure that any children in the homes would be safe. We pointed out that the opportunities for any inappropriate behaviour would be a tad limited given the nature of the work.It happens like that the public sector

It's a shame they dont value people more for positions like this. It's obviously not important to them afterall.
I thought the point of changing from crb to dbs was so you could have just one and work in a variety of places on the strength of it? Madness.

I was recently asked by someone in the village if I would like to drive a school bus between ferrying kids between two schools to help out. I wasn't bothered but I said ok, I presumed it was a volunteer role. It turned out that its a paid job and that I'd have to complete an application form. 26 pages this form, they want know the inside and out of a ducks bum!
All the schools I went don't exist, and all the companies I worked for are no longer trading, a pointless exercise. And they want a DBS. For this they pay the minimum wage.
The minimum wage for taking responsibility for twenty five thousand pound bus and twelve kids. FFS!
