I've just had a car renewal quote from Saga (yes, yes) Third Party Fire and Theft for my 11 year old Astra. Crikey, I thought, £483 i.e. 32% up! So off back to Tesco where I last insured it - buggrit, same price within a fiver.

Hang on, what if I insure it Fully Comprehensive? £308.61. Makes sense if you think about it, but I hadn't, so it was a surprise.

That is because the insurance product is Fully Comp. Everything else is a downgrade from the main product.
When getting quotes you should always ask for Fully Comp first before exploring the other options. In the eyes of the underwriters, people asking for fully comp are probably better drivers then those looking for a cheaper option.

I spent years working at Norwich Union (Aviva) when I was younger and they told us all sorts of interesting info about insurance.

As your a possible Sagalout, we must be a similar age. I pay less than £200 for my Seat Ibiza. £300 seams quite expensive. Of course I know area, blah, blah, all put the price up.

a blonde of my acquaintance switched to Saga last year and her premium went from nine hundred to under five hundred (that's a postcode thing, not a car thing).

Oh - and now I am going to have to kill you all..........

It's only just occurred to me that I am eligible for membership of Saga. Are their any financial benefits from membership other than car insurance?

I assume that you can get discounts on stuff (not just Stannah stairs lifts) but the only other thing I use them for is their share dealing platform, which is run by Barclays. I moved my modest self-select ISA there when I got fed up with Santander and the service is much better.

Er ..... I have a free bus pass.

It's a 1.7 turbo diesel, which is brisk-ish. I've just a look at Go Compare and although there are half a dozen quotes under £300, they aren't from people I would want to deal with.

The most expensive part of the insurance to the insurance company is the Third Party bit. The own damage and theft element is nothing unless you are driving a super car.

Never insure TPFT always go fully Comp.

Another tip, if your young son/daughter is looking for coverage, get them, to put you down as a named driver of their vehicle. It usually brings the price down, even if you would only drive it in emergencies.

Not far from my bus pass although the goal posts are moving  I am surprised about the quotes, perhaps for you old senile folks the price starts to rise again ;)
