I not only cycle but being in the snow belt, I sit inside and watch a lot of cycling videos in the winter. I see so many rider on long rides that seem to have nothing in the way of tools or tire repair kits. What happens if they have a flat. I myself have a trunk pack on the back of my trike with tools parts patch kits and tubes. I hate the idea of walking home.

Those that appear at face value to be a dedicated cyclist, but have poor lighting and dark clothing always amaze me too. You’d think they’d be more aware of their own vulnerability…….

A couple of tubes/repair patches and a multitool and pump don't take up much room - pockets a lot of the time, or a small saddle pack. What are you taking, a kitchen sink ?

The tools i need to keep me on the road take up very little room. My allen keys, tyre levers, chain tool and puncture patches fit in a neoprene case intended for a compact digital camera. I keep it in a small saddle bag but it will wedge under my saddle or sit nicely in a pocket. Would the OP see my tools if i didn't have the saddle bag? I very much doubt it.

A while ago I realised that I need 2 multitools

becuase some moron designer put things on the bike where you need 2 different allen keys

Ok they are of different sizes - but in a tool kits that means 2 multitools!!

but people not carrying a puncture kit and pump is just crazy to my mind

Some people do take the piss though! One colleague out on a summer evening ride with me punctured and stood at the side of the road looking embarrassed until I finally asked him why he wasn't fixing it. Turned out that he no tools or spares with him! So, I fixed it ...

When I was done, I asked him why he had not been prepared and he cheerfully told me that "I don't need to carry all that crap - I never get punctures!" I politely informed him that I didn't see it as my place in life to be 'a carrier of the crap that my colleague doesn't want to carry' and that I would never repair a puncture for him again. If he wasn't prepared to repair his own bike, then he must be prepared to do his own walk! (Or phone his girlfriend and explain to her why she should have to rush out of her yoga class, jump in the car and drive 20 miles to get him just because he was too lazy to carry a couple of tyre levers, a pump and a spare tube and/or a puncture kit!)

I just can't get my head round the attitude that it's 'everybody else's responsibility to keep me safe'.

For example last week's four buffoons coming out of the village heads down and going for it. Two abreast, no lights, all dressed in black, riding into the low sun on a wet and very shiny road.
What could possibly go wrong?

Indeed. 3 grand on a bike, but a tenner on a basic set of lights is toouch for the luvvies.

And wearing something visible is just not cool enough

Reminds me of a documentary I saw a while ago about a black family in a "black area" of a dodgy city
They were a good family and the Mum and Dad had good jobs and all that
and the kids were nice kids

but the kids were still constantly being stopped - and worse - by the cops for "reasons"
naturally nearly all the cops were white

They were moaning to their Dad once and he challenged them to try wearing bright clothes ratehr than the "cool " dark stuff that the otehr kids wore

they just stopped being targets for the cops

They were being interviewed for the documentary and they were shown walking down a street
the cops pulled some other kids over and any other black kids they could see

these 2 in their bright-coloured t-shirts just walked past and were left alone

(one of them commented "if the drug dealers want ro get the drugs through - they should dress like us - but they won;t because "its ain;t cool")

these people on teh bikes in all black with no lights are the same

"I gotta be cool and if I die then so be it"

I was never like that I just wore what I wanted - but then I do remember some of the cooler kids thinking I was weird!

I took out the cover solely for the “get you home” aspect. In all honesty I hope that I never need to find out if their service is as good as they make out, I would prefer to get where I’m going and return home under my own steam without incident.

I personally don't feel I should be expected to do anything more than comply with the law in order to be safe on the roads, which it sounds like they were doing.
