Actually I think giving a cheery wave is probably the best reaction you could have given in the situation, except for nothing at all. It sounds like he was riled and annoyed and generally upset that cyclists exist and hold him up for thirty seconds. He would have jumped on any opportunity to communicate with you.

Is my wave fine

Yes

a bit naughty but understandable

A bit naughty but amusing

No

or am I responsible for his death (whenever that may be)

And you're bothered because?...

Have I made things worse for cyclists

No, he thinks anyone that doesn't drive in a manner convenient to him is a p*****, whatever the vehicle.

or does his prior behaviour show that his attitude couldn't get any worse anyway?

Yes, but you know that already!

Doesn't sound like Mr P held him up at all - he's just one of those twonks who can't let anyone change lanes or get a 1m advantage.

FWIW I don't think you did anything wrong. A wave is a perfectly acceptable reaction, it's his fault for misinterpreting it the way he did.

I think in that kind of situation there isn't any reasonable response you can make that will be guaranteed not to antagonize someone who's looking for you to rise to their provocation -even no response at all. He might have a need to just keep pushing for a response until he gets to cause some damage to you or the next person to come along. Maybe you would do some good to all those around him dissipating his anger by having a stand up fight? Who can tell?

I would probably have waved..............a finger!

He's trapped and frustrated and wants you to share.

I got called a "Spack" by some kids, I just comforted myself that I don't live on their manky estate or look like they looked, there is no point reacting, as next time its fuse wire stretched over the road, just ignoring them makes them look the idiots they are and to be honest, in my hi viz and plastic hat, i do look a bit of a "Spack"

Didnt think that word was still in common usage ?

I would have done the same.
