topped with £160 2 months ago for tyres, £140 for 6 months road tax last month and the MOT looming i may as well sell a kidney on ebay to run the damned thing!

Just paid out 230 for a new exhaust for the missus car, first one since new 13 years ago. Just cost me an arm and a leg for a new Nissan catalytic converter, for my car, and now I suspect an ABS ring has cracked, causing the ABS light to come on at motorway speeds.

Ouch.

Try BMW:

Clutch (supposed to last the life of the car), wrecked at 49,000 miles = £570.
Differential (supposed to last longer then car), £20 input bearing failed at 59,000 miles = £1500 negotiated down to £850.
Cam Cover Gasket = £300.
New Key = £65 + Programming = £30.
Traction control piston kit = £500 (whole new unit £2500 if that goes).
75,000 mile 'inspection' = £75 to £100, including £20 to reset the service indicator.
Front wheel bearing worth £20 = "Sorry sir, not available separate", £450.
Alignment of all 4 wheels (rear wheel drive). Dealer = £200, Independent = £70.

Oh and for the biggest laugh - This car is BMW Approved Used!
Every car I've owned lasted a minimum of 7 years, the above is what this car cost in less than 2 years.

Blimey and I'm moaning about my little KA, Going to need a nearside sill for the MOT in the spring, the area round the filler cap had already been repaired before I brought it but is starting to go again, I brought it at the end of August and so far 4 new tyres, old ones had plenty of tread but had started to deteriorate, a service and a replacement coil pack, it was the original coil pack fitted in the factory eight years ago.

That reminds me:
Ignition coils replaced due to design fault.
All locking motors replaced due to water ingress.

Please see reply #56 of this thread!

My characterless little Toyota Corolla has thus far been very reliable, but it is now over 6 years old. If I stay in my current job I don't really NEED a car, so I fear that this one will not be getting replaced. That decision is being made easier by some of the previous posts. I have had nice cars in the past and enjoyed them, but the times they are a changin'.

Blimey!!!
And I used to quibble at paying £30 for a rear section for one of my old Defender Tdi's back in the very late 90's when it rotted through

And. as of todays prices
Brake pads (circa £15)
Brake discs (vented) under £16
300Tdi starter motor (under) £100

Etc, etc

Have you ever had a problem with your immobiliser on the 300 mine is playing up a bit but I wouldn't drive anything else.

Buy an older, simple car, learn to service it yourself and if an expensive bill looms, sell it to the scrap man for most of what you paid in the first place.

If you keep it running long enough, it may even appreciate in value if the classic brigade take an interest. People collect Ford Sierras nowadays for heavens sake. A few years ago, you couldn't give one away:wacko:
