I have never been a racer and I am not trying to increase my speed. But I thought I would try and "Push" it on the way home on my 20km commute tonight.

I can ride all day with little effort at 20kph.

Well I pushed it up and down hill and in the end achieved an average of 21.4kph and had a tongue like a lolling dog and was knackered. The extra effort was not worth the extra distance. Tortoise and hare springs to mind.

Has anyone else found this with their riding?

It sounds less in mph.

I know exactly what you mean .... though after a few years of effort keeping up on club rides I've gone from a 14mph kind of guy to a 15mph (24kph) kind of guy. (I'll say nothing about the hills, though). I read a book last year that classified some people as "unracers". On flat rides I know I can keep going at 15mph all day comfortably, but I am most definitely an unracer.

It must be a Strava thing, I've just checked my stats for today and it has given me a 21.4 Kph, and I'm useless.

I had a bit of a shock the other week when i looked through my old cycling/exercise diaries. 15 years ago i was averaging 16/17 mph. Nowadays it's more like 13/14mph, even though my bike and my body weight combined are around 18 kilos less now than then.
I could push it and go at 15/16mph but it'd take too much effort and take away the enjoyment of cycling.

That's why I like the metric system, 50K sounds sooo much better than 30 odd miles.
BTW Strava tells me average this year is 24.1kph and Garmin Connect says 23.4kph, so I'm splitting the difference at 23.75kph (14.75mph). Not bad seeing as I'm fat, unfit, & fifty something!

I have the same problem. My figures are almost identical to yours.

I cant work in mph anymore. 8 years in Germany and 15 in Denmark. I would be depressed to find my average speed to be 6mph :0)

I may not be fast but I will go a long way.

Over the years i've slowly started to convert mph to kph. Watching stuff like the TdF you have to,otherwise you're left wondering how fast that rider is flying down that hill at. "He's doing 67 kilometers an hour" means bugger all if you can't convert it. So i now do the 10 k's is 6.2 m's in my head, So let me see, He's flying down that hill at 67 kilometers an hour, so that's six six's and er let me see:scratch:60 percent of the 7 is about 4, so without looking it up it's around 40mph i reckon.

The answer varies depending on the exchange rate t the time. I expect with Bexit we will finish up with less miles to the kilometre.
