I hit the floor this morning

I was riding to work along Archers Rd in Soton, approaching the junction with Banister Rd here

There was a big queue heading in my direction so I slip down the RHS and merge in when the traffic starts moving again. The lights go red and I take a position second in the queue. Now I notice there is something wrong with the bike at this point, felt a bit like I was holding it on ice.

Anyhoo I set off from the lights, try to turn left and bang I hit the floor. Front wheel had slid out. Not hurt too much but embarassing. someone asked if I was ok which was nice.

So I check the tyres and they are covered in some kind of greasy stuff, maybe oil from someones old banger, dont know. I'm sure it couldn't have been ice and the leaves have not turned sludgy yet. I give the tyres a wipe with mygloves and set off again but now I'm very timid

tyres are new vitorria rubino tyres with not much tread, 700 by 23. would tread or wider tyres have helped???

Be careful what you ride thru!

I hear you. I didn't take primary at all this morning because to do so would mean riding through the spots of oil that some poor sod had leaked along almost my entire route.

Tyres without tread are far grippier on the roads then tyres with treads.
It just seem's unlucky that you hit some spilled diesel or similar. No tyres are grippy with that gunk.

Tyres probably have around 100 miles on them so pretty new on both wheels.

Would this be bad??

I'm gutted that this happened with these tyres. They look so much cooler than my worn out Gatorskins cos they're blue!

They would have scrubbed in by now. It looks like it was diesel or such like.

I have the Blue ones too...

Diesel. I once saw moped rider (remember the Honda Camino?) wearing tracksuit bottoms slide across two lanes of a roundabout on her bum. The tracksuit had no rips afterwards, just a greasy mark.

I thinkj studded tyres might be the only thing that could have helped!

Glad your ok .

Another thing to avoid is manholes and white lines , especially in the wet as they can b just as bad.It is very scarey when you back wheel hits a wet drain cover and just starts spinning .

the 'poor sod' leaking oil shouldn't be driving a car in that state, that's the law

I went down rather hard on a mini rab last year, dark, no warning at all, wallop, I reported it but heaven knows if anything was done about it
