I called in tonight to buy a couple of spokes and a rear light mount for my cateye rear light and left with the promise of the loan of their flagship hand built Rohloff hubbed belt drive touring bike for a full weekend's test ride.

How good it that?

The one that I will be test riding looks like this:

It currently sports mudguards and looks more business like.

I've come round to the idea of belt drive bikes.
Just got a Trek Sawyer which has a split frame to make it possible to fit a belt. However think I'm going to go the Alfine hub gears with that instead.

Can't seem to find any of the Gates carbon drives for sale in the UK.

Sorry seemed to have tried to hi-jack the thread then – sounds like a great bike shop!

It will be interesting to see what you think of the belt drive. I've always fancied the idea of it especially given I prefer hub gears but considered them less efficient due to the tension required to prevent the belt jumping teeth.
It the crank spin as, or nearly as, freely as a chain then that will be good.

The 'teeth' are quite big so the tension is not that great.

I saw my first belt drive tourer in the wild this summer on the Danube cycleway. Its owner had done 4000km with it and loved everything about it.

I was disappointed when I walked into my lbs today, had the full intention of buying an Endura Helium jacket, but the owner wasn't in and I got nothing more than a look up from the chap sat head down behind the counter.

Not even any recognition when I left either... bad times!
