I remember when I first got on 'the internet'. It would have been around 1994, I was about 14, and my Dad had 'compuserve', which gave access to newsgroups and that - this is before the web.

I remember thinking wow this is amazing I can chat to and make friends with people from ALL OVER THE WORLD! I can speak to people from the US and Japan and and countries I've never heard of! It's so exciting and amazing!

For me the best use of the internet is in putting together people with things to sell and buy. You might be a vintage car enthusiast who needs a split pin for a 1922 Grunge coupé suspension shackle and there might be a bloke in Detroit who happens to have one in his shed. I once sold a leather motorcycle jacket to a bloke in Tokyo - I expect he wanted the dead flies, the ingrained red Australian desert dust and the instant street cred of wearing my old clothes. Amazingly I sold it for the same money I had paid for it 20 years earlier at Rivetts of London.
