I can't remember who organised it, possibly the WWF, but there was a public vote to name an endangered species of whale a few years ago. Many names were put forward, variations on Peace, Love, Tranquility etc.

Then the Internet found out and it was named Mr Splashypants.
It could have ended up as Whaley McWhaleface.

No it wasn't. President Ford ordered the name changed after a letter writing campaign by Trekkies. There was no vote.

The Enterprise was only a test mule for the real shuttles. It never flew under power or went into space.

I was going to claim a fistful of TMNs, but then I noticed this lot in the reply box, all nicely saved from this morning:

Not True!
First space shuttle name was chosen by public vote.
Not entirely true. It was was originally to be named Constitution, it being around the the time of the Bicentennial celebrations, but public demand (not a vote) led to the renaming. The irony is that Enterprise never did make it to orbit.

Thanks, Chrome...

Story in OP updated:
Update: The Natural Research Council posted a clarification on Sunday saying the final decision will be made by a panel, not the votes.

They are based in Swindon

Buy them a couple of Lambrinis and a few White Lightnings and Boaty McBoatface is secured
