I need to make a decision ! Boardman Road Comp or CX Comp.

Hi all , I need some advise please. I've just signed up to Cycle to work scheme and my limit is £700 with Halfords. Out of these two bikes Boardman Road Comp and Boardman CX Comp, I'm really finding it difficult to make my final decision. Yes one is road and the other is cyclocross, but it seems you get more for your money spec wise with the Road Comp. Thanks .

Where are you riding? Do you need full mudguards and fixed pannier rack?

CX Comp is much more versatile. Most people I suspect would be better served by a bike that's comfortable on tow paths and so on than one that's suitable for a sportive.

We go on family cycles. Cyclepaths which are tarmac, next to the canals which are hard gravel. But I also like to hit the open road and ride off into the distance to cover some mileage at higher speeds.

Perhaps the CX with a spare pair of wheels with slicker tyres (check what wheels you could add)

The Schwalbe Tyragos are a trekking tyre so will roll fine on tarmac and will have enough grip for the mild off-road rides you describe.

Don't rate these tyres terribly high- they roll 'ok' on tarmac, but not great since the centre treads are offset- and they wear incredibly fast, puncture protection is also so so. 35c tyres are a good compromise between speed and comfort.

I am really tempted by the CX comp, and do not need more reasons to throw caution to the wind and just buy one.

I'd get the road comp and and old MTB for the family duties but if it really has to be one bike then the CX for your usage...

Thanks for all your replies and advice. I Appreciate it, My dilemma continues. Right I've decided that I'm going to go for a CX bike so that I can basically do it all as it will be my only bike. Had my mind set on the Boardman CX comp. Today went into a LBS , and to cut a long story short, I was introduced to the Genesis range. Mid September they are getting in the new 2015 models, one of them being a CDA 10 which is modelled on the Croix de fer. It looks awesome. £699 with carbon fork. Image attached.
