HTC Desire may be the preferred choice of forumites

Well, the HTC Desire is the preferred choice of some people on the forum.

I should expect though that the forum would reflect the buying preferences of the population at large where iPhone still have the market share. But the iPhone users just buy what they and get on with life instead of crusading for the 'one true way'. They have Apple to do that for them!

I have an iPhone, it does it's job very well. It also looks good which is nice. I've seen HTC phones and had a couple of young people, both under 20, demonstrate the wonders to me. I've no doubt the HTCs are very, very good but where I feel they suffer is the strong impression I've gained is they are rather "techie." 99% of the reasons to chose an HTC etc that I read about make me feel they could be / will be tricky to use. Many of the benefits of HTC are argued in a manner I'll never understand.

I use my iPhone to make phone calls, collect e-mail, read the web, keep my calendar, take pictures, store talking books and music - all of this syncs simply with my two laptops. Occasionally I use the map features and a few apps and it was great for uploading pictures of my summer tour to Facebook. For anyone who just wants to do these things quickly and simply iPhone works very well. If you need to constantly multi-task, have a better operating system, have the absolute leading edge this, that or the other, which you may or may not understand and may or may not use get an HTC.

iPhone works, very, very easily. It's a no brainer for me. It's a bit like Microsoft and Linux. The latter may well be better but the former just works well for the vast majority.

Nope: the user-interface is very similar to an iPhone, they just have some extra features which make life easier.

If she doesn't know what smart phones are why does she want one ?
Does she want one for specific uses or just because everyone has one ?
If the latter then get an iPhone as that fulfills the style accessory function
the best purely on the basis of brand.
If the former then report back with a list.

I didn't say she doesn't know what a smart phone is, I was trying to imply that she is not brand aware

I have a hero Rich (It's you :) and I thought it would be interesting for me to 'learn all about it' and 'get down with the hood' etc
Everyone asks if I have games on it. What My pork sausages can more or less operate the touch-screen keyboard, predictive text confounding my already warped message thoughts, and there is a facility for a bigger one. (opens gate...)
Surfing is ok at times and, as Big Martin says, the battery life is dire. The later models are neater though.
Only used an Apple briefly and there is no doubt - they look good. (Mind you, I saw my son's iPhone last weekend and he had dropped it on its corner - from no height - and the screen crazed into broken glass.)
Listen to LBC tonight at 9pm (Fridays) to hear Darren Tossl, a tech geek chap field questions and generally expound the virtues of iPhone. He's a real Mac/fone fan and always has an interesting point of view. www.lbc.co.uk - The Gadget Guru is lurking somewhere on that site and you can listen live etc...

Oh - and you can make phone calls with some of these things you know.

Launcher Pro is ok I suppose. I tried it and ADW but in the end I just went back to vanilla Android with 3 screens. If you want 7 screens, you've got HTC Sense.

I've had my iPhone nicked (we were burgled and they took all the electrical "bling" they could get in my daughter's handbag, see my previous posting on this topic)

So, I have been hunting for a replacement and I have to say that I would still go for the iPhone - it's just so pretty! Until I got it, I had made do with the kid's cast-off phones, I never thought I would use all the techie stuff, and the apps were beyond me...but I really miss it! I miss my calendar, email, browsing, facebook, GPS, texting, oh and the occasional phone-call too!

Mine was on contract with Tesco with 6 months to go (best deals on the high-street for iPhones). In order to get the use of the contract I need to buy an off-the-peg iPhone at a minimum of £349, or around £500 for the iPhone 4. Not happy about this as I only paid £222 when I took the contract. Doesn't help that the insurance only offer £320.

That's exactly what happened to me. I had a tesco 16gb 3gs stolen, and now I have the 8gb version, new and unlocked from apple. I'm not really an ipod user so i don't need the extra space. Still, it irks a bit, but the insurance covered it alright with a bit to spare for a better cover.
