I realised that today I was in the minority

I realised that today I was in the minority. I have always felt that I was in the minority because of been a cyclist/runner.

But having gone to a large well known supermarket today and looking at all the other customers I felt that I was on the fringe of society, I was not a standard member of my community, I was looked at with strange eyes saying that I just don't look right.

Why was I feeling like this, why was I not 'normal' well it was because I was not

FAT.

The majority of people in the store were overweight. The children and the adults all looked big. I was in the minority. What is happening with our society when most people look a bit tubby. Is it just me?

Nope, you're right.

And the stuff they put in their trolleys  it's no wonder they look like they do.

They'll probably tell you it's glandular though ;)

No, it's not just you ST...i see the same everytime i go to the shops...i just got back from one of out local shopping centres, we were sat in the car and i said to SWMBO, 'you know, its scary how many 15/16 year old girls you see who are quite clearly carrying too much weight'
Everywhere you go, there are overweight people.

As an indication...SWMBO has lost some considerable weight this last year and is now a size 8. She constantly says it's difficult to find clothes in size 8, the racks are full of 12/14/16/18s...and larger.

By the same token, there's an underlying reason that applies to a lot of people. SWMBO works full time. It's a handfull to do that, look after a home, shop, cook etc etc etc. I've noticed we eat more pre-prepared food than ever before. Not fast food...but even so.
People (some anyway) just havnt the time to eat the way we used to.

Yes... and no. I very rarely take more than 20 minutes to make my dinner, from scratch - usually something on pasta, or curry, or stirfry - I'm too impatient to take much longer. The only 'pre-prepared' food I eat is things like pies, sausages or the odd chicken kiev. About 80-90% of the time, I'm in total control of the contents of my dinner. I'm not saying that means they are always healthy ;), but I know exactly what's in them. I know I live alone, but it doesn't take much longer to chop a whole onion than to chop a quarter of one, etc. And if you have a decent sized freezer (I only have an icebox), you can make up huge batches of stuff and defrost as you need to.

But yes, more people are overweight it seems. I've lost a bit recently, just a stone, just by having a physical job and controlling my portions a bit better, and suddenly I feel postively slim compared to the masses - but I'm still a 14 (although I reckon I might make it to 12 eventually).

There was a kid hanging around the centre as I left work the other day, barrel shaped he was, and as I watched he stuffed almost an entire bag of mini cheddars into his mouth.

Also, there's booze. I'm still amazed at the amount of booze bottles and cans we collect every week from some houses. And booze is stuffed with calories.

I was at a cycling pal's stag dinner a little while ago, looking around the table, all wheelers in their 40s, all slim, fit, young-looking. I'd be 20 stone too if I didn't cycle. Thank god for the bike.

Depends on your height!

When I decided to lose weight, I was just over the top end of ideal BMI. I'm just within ideal now, and comfortably getting into size 14 - it was getting to be a squeeze. At 5' 3" I'll never be willowy, but I'm in better proportion...

I've lost over 10kg since I started commuting by bike just over a year ago.

Aw sorry Millie, i didnt mean to infer that size 12 should label someone as overweight, more that there are precious few size 8 women round now...purely judging by the availability of that size clothes.

SWMBO was a size 8 when i met her at 16. 35 years later she's back to that size (she did go up to an size 16/18). Its amazing how many people say to her...you look too skinny. Its rubbish of course...she's back to her natural size. Moderately healthy eating (we still occasionally eat a McDonalds or eat out...certainly not salad every day), excercise and stopping eating processed foods (pies etc).

Going back to teenage girls (and boys)...i wonder what chance they have being that weight at 15..of ever getting into a healthy weight band.
