I think we've all been off on ice at some point or other. In my case enough times to make me rule out riding when there's ice or snow on the roads. It just isn't worth the risk.

If you have clearance on your bike, Marathon studded tyres are the answer to commuting safely on ice, pricey but they will last you many winters.
For transporting wine, don't get the train, get panniers
