I read a post and think maybe I can contribute. Then I see the thread has got to x pages and think 'nah, my point will have been covered by now' . I don't bother to read it to check though.

In general, I'm surprised how little I contribute in comparison to how much I read. I'd even gotten into the habit of not logging on simply because I'd come to the conclusion that I wouldn't be posting anything.

Not very community minded is it?

Couldn't agree with you more.

I will contribute if the thread is reasonably new, but once it it has several pages in it, even if it is one I have contributed to, I will probably just pass it by.

There are some exceptions though.

My most used feature of the forum is the mark forum as read option.

I am sometimes able to help when people ask advice on older style bikes. I am not really up to date on modern bike mechanics, compatibilites and the such like. As most people on here tend to ride modern bikes my knowledge is somewhat out of date!

You're making the assumptions that good advice is given, and on occassions it's not. There's still a lot of myth in cycling. I know where you're coming from, but I usually give-em a quick skim, sometimes there's something I can help with.

Odd as this may sound, I think lots of people will find CC easier to participate in when we move to the new software.

The removal of a lot of visual "clunk" puts the focus back on the content and means you can get through threads quicker. There are also a couple of neat features that speed up navigation and allow you to jump back to threads you've previously been involved in or have on your watch list.

Cheers,
Shaun

I also make the assumption that my advice will be good! I probably contribute to the myths just as much as anyone!

But, yes, you're right. Believe or not, I can get (semi) depressed when I read what I regard to be myth perpetuation. I give up. I think 'sod it, believe what you want'. It's happening increasingly more often too. I think I'm getting old ;)

I think much the same Yello. I almost start from the premise that everything's been said before and reiteration is just wasting my time. I don't even mean that it's been said on a particular thread but elsewhere on CC over the past years. Old and tired

Carry on quipping but long-winded help is almost beyond me.

Anyway, I may head for the beach and a dip later. It may recharge me.

My current mode is simply just to look at "your ride today". This lets me know that there cyclists out there who actually ride bikes.

I can understand this thought. I would add that I have learnt a huge amount from this forum (road position, maintenance to name but a few from a vast amount).
Yes, you may feel that repeating advice or tip serves no purpose, but look at it in the context of reviews... the more people in agreement, the better/more robust the advice could be (rather than what 'could' be potentially seen as an opinion)*

And yes, I too am guilty of not contributing if the thread hits several pages! :/

*Certain threads within the pub may serve to confuse based on the diversity of opinion!;)

(I notice it is now current affairs and debates)

Do not give up; there are many of us who are new to cycling and gullible!

I still answer, not all but the ones which take my fancy. What disappoints me sometimes is if you put a lot of effort into answering a post, posting links, doing a bit of research and then you don't even get an acknowledgement or the thread never gets updated, so you don't know if what you've written was useful. It's nice to know either way really, clues you up for the next time a similiar question gets asked. One thing I always try to do is complete a thread where I've asked for advice, even though it might be months later.
