I've had gear selection issues with my tourer since getting back from the Western Isles in June. As it's been summer I've been lazy and just ridden a different bike, but I finally got round to trying to reindex the gears tonight, and found out why it wouldn't shift properly: -

That crack goes straight through the frame from the dropout, round the mech hanger hole and out the bottom, meaning that the seatstay and chainstay were being held together by the wheel QR only. :sad:

It's only a couple years old, and has done about 12,000 km so it should be covered under warranty but it's still annoying and as the bike that started me touring so it will be missed :cry:

It's fixable by a good frame builder, assuming it's steel, but it'll be relatively expensive as it'll probably need the frame repainting. Depends how much the frame is worth & sentimental value to you.

Its 6061 Aluminium and not really worth fixing.

Good news is the bike shop have just rung back and said that Dawes are sorting out a new frame - they haven't even seen the bike yet :smile:

I agree this is very good service in this instance. They offered me a choice between this frame and a Karakum frame that I could have had in a couple weeks. Looking at it that may have been the same frame as the Vantage one, but as the Karakum is a butterfly barred tourer I wasn't sure about the geometries. {eta} I've also noticed the Karakum doesn't have a rear guide for canti brakes.{/eta}

The LBS is Ainfield Cycles in Cleator Moor, Cumbria. I asked them today what paperwork they wanted me to bring in and their reply was that as I bought the bike from them then they have the details themselves so I didn't need to bother.
