The act of cycling is a complex orchestration that demands constant attention from nearly all of our senses. Of those, keeping our vision focused on the road ahead is paramount. In fact, taking our eyes off the road, even to glance at a Garmin GPS or similar can be hazardous.
Heads-up displays (or head-up display / HUD) mean you do not need to do this. They can also present data from the smart phone located in your pocket such as the weather reports, traffic reports and similar.
I see more advantages for HUD displays than disadvantages above the fact that you do not need to take your eyes of the road and refocus.

I'm with srw, all a load of "stuff" that we are told we "need" when it's just more gimmicks to make money with little benefit to the user.

And before anyone asks about whether I take my eyes off the road to loom at my Garmin, I don't have one - I got rid of computer years ago long before I had ever heard of Garmin

It's a bit more complicated than that...
@Mr Haematocrit - You may have bionic vision - I would need to refocus all the time (despite perfect corrected vision at anything above elbow-distance). And the additional data you cite does begin to make my point for me....

(I have bike computer and GPS. Usually the GPS is on the stoker's handlebars, though it has a convenient audible turn alarm if I'm on my own. I'm as likely to go out with a map in my pocket, partly because the toys need pre-programming.)

Interesting perspective and it is always good to hear other views.
I have purchased them specifically for TT's as I feel not moving out of my position to review my power/cadence/speed/heart rate will have value in both consistency and time. I'm also a self confessed geek so am interested in these from a technological perspective as much as anything.
As they have not started shipping yet, the reality is I can only speculate and hope the reality is the picture I have in my mind.

Isn't part of the advantage of HUDs not just that you don't need to look up and down, but that you don't need to refocus, because the display is projected as a virtual image at an infinite distance?

I can think of multiple reasons why I personally would not want one - a cycle trip that does not involve unfolding a paper Ordnance Survey map at least once at the side of the road is a cycle trip wasted for me -, but I think there can be little doubt that, if you decide you need or want to access electronic information at all, a HUD is a more ergonomically efficient way of doing it.

It turns out (I didn't know) that yes, the display is at infinity. My best guess, however, is that normal cycling focussing distance isn't infinity - I think I tend to look far closer when I'm on the bike than I do when I'm driving, for instance.

Vulnerability is a state of mind?

Maybe...Ive have never thought of myself as being vulnerable and I have never been a victim.

I will leave it for the deeper thinkers to work it all out. Im too busy solving Garmin connect.

I'm puzzled: if the image is at infinity how do you focus on it?

Also I'm not sure what a virtual image is.

What a bunch of prehistoric, luddite** gainsayers you lot are?
Are you seriously trying to tell me that having your latest phone calls and music library displayed wouldn't be a major improvement in cycling safety.
Keep up, you squares.
