OK it could be worse.... I work from home, have to travel a couple of days a week, but sometimes not at all. But I would like to HAVE to cycle every day

I am in Bristol today where I used to live, and used to cycle commute, up the A38 to Aztec West. I drove up the A38 this morning from a hotel, and had those lucky cycle commuters whizzing past on the inside - took me back to the good old days

Having said all that, I am usually able to go for a lunchtime ride and then sit in my sweaty kit all day if I want, whilst on conference calls!

I know what you mean. I find I am working more and more from the office just so I have to cycle, there is nothing like being at work and having to get home as motivation for another 16mile bike ride!!

I find that when I work from home (I often have the option) I just cant be arsed to go out.

I really miss my regular commute. It's the only thing that gets me out on a bike. Alas, working 75 miles from home makes it, er, unrealistic to bike it.

I hate going up the A38 by car at rush-hours times (only on rare occasions)... it comes to a stand still near Aztec West and then you sit there watching all the bikes go past thinking lucky them (and its usually quite a few miles before you overtake them again). It would drive me mad to have to work up there and drive!!! Mr Summerdays used to do it - but mostly took the company bus - he hadn't discovered cycling then.

What's stopping you?

Set the alarm 1 1/2 hours earlier and go for a 1 hour circular before coming home to shower and breakfast.

Then in the afternoon, go round the circular in the opposite direction.

fair question, I'd actually opt for the lunchtime ride though, I don't see any point in taking on the dark, cold and traffic if not needed.

But that's all part of the adventure of a daily commute ;)

Sorry to be a party pooper but after about four rough months of commuting I can actually say the last two days commuting have been good and I actually have more energy and can seem to go faster as opposed to struggling at between ten and fifteen mph.

Just a few weeks ago I was finding it so hard I was thinking of packing it in.

....and that's different from being in the office how?

Without the discipline of the commute I'd struggle to maintain the miles. I'm also lucky enough to have a benign commute and, if I can ride all the way instead of bike-rail-bike, then it has enough to it to keep it interesting. I think I'd struggle to stay motivated if I commuted through some of our fair cities though.

Set up a turbo trainer in front of your pc and get the miles in that way. Then you can go for a run first thing and a swim at lunch time. You could see if you could get your trainer to power the pc too.

I hope your job doesn't require displays of initiative.....

i know where you're coming from...i used to travel each day from Bristol. I worked as far west as Swansea south to plymouth and further to Bournmouth....up to Birm...and on Monday morn to London....i hated it
I got made redundant and now earn half the salary i used to, my luxuries are few but i have a smile on my face each day as i cycle to and from work nomatter the weather. Whatever the day brings at 5.00pm i jump on my bike and within a few mins am on the cycle track....forget money...forget cars...forget laptops...forget mobiles...forget free lunches...forget conferences.....just gimme my bike and the open road...and i'm happy :biggrin:

The thing I like about cycling to work is it keeps me active/fit when I just can't be bothered doing a leisure ride.
Although I probably do more exercise now than when I commuted, the benefits of a guaranteed workout twice a day are massive
