So i am a fan of Mr Charles Dickens.Great Expectations,i believe was the first decent book i ever read. This past twelve months i have bought again a selection of his works from Amazon,Waterstones and E bay.I also have bought adaptations on dvd.One of which is Great Expectations, with the Fabulous John Mills as Pip.
I have watched this twice. Now last night i finished the book.Whoa the book is very different in how it comes to it's finish, the film took some liberties with the story line, but i love both the book and film.
Now i wonder how many other adaptations of well known books took liberties with endings.Any thoughts out there.

Changing the story when adapting a book for the screen is pretty common. A couple with different endings that spring to mind are Jurassic Park which wrapped things up with a neat sequel-friendly finish for the film and Lord of the Rings where Peter Jackson could have added another hour and an extra battle sequence at the end of Return of the King if he'd wanted.

The Choirboys by Joe Wambaugh was one of the funniest black comedies I ever read. The film version ruined it by rewriting a happy ending to replace the tragic finale depicted in the book. The author himself hated it.

IIRC the death of the shark in Jaws was different in the film and book. I may not remember correctly though, it was a long time ago.

Biggest travesty was the complete changing of the end of "I Am Legend"....completely missed the point of the book.

Oh, and the film was sh** in many other ways too.
