Excellent news Airbrake.

Just take it steady. Those muscles will come back, but it will take time. Enjoy being able to get out though.

10 very steady miles today, and the weather was perfect !

Well done airbrake and good luck.

I'm also coming back from a hip re-surfacing operation I had done in October, mine was caused by a bike accident a number of years ago and it just wore out.

I've covered 8 miles so far so we'll see who gets back to the 100 first.

I had a new hip on November 11th and I'm up to 40 miles, 3 times a week now. Good luck with the training and rehab lads.

Thanks ArDee, and I hope your recovery is going well !

100 miles... in one ride ??? - that could be some way off... but I'm all for positive thinking

Ha, mines not as bad, just a shoulder op three weeks ago. Did an 8 miler last week, and a 10 miler on the road bike (not supposed to ride road bike yet) but as I've got now't better to do, I'm off for a flat (as far as I can find) 30 miler this morning - on the road bike. !

This is just showing off! Well done, I'm envious. I had a hip resurfacing so have a 9 - 10 inch scar across the posterior, I find that it pulls when I'm on the saddle for too long and starts to ache. Anyway that’s my excuse and I’m stuck with it.

Hi Airbrake,

*loaded question alert* Just checking whether you had your mobile on that ride?

After 2 decent rides in good weather, my spirits were lifted and the colour returned to my cheeks...

Then I opened the results of my bone scan and read that I had osteoporosis...

Given my age (just turned 52) this is unusual, so further tests are needed and hopefully some treatment is available.

I will still be out on the bike (I now wear armoured shorts which give some peace of mind), but this news has really made me think. Oh well.. another hurdle

Only just found this thread, glad you're back on the bike and doing well. As to the osteoporosis I'm no expert but I'm sure you'll be able to find a positive outcome and remain cycling.

The day you posted your original thread my bike threw me off to the right as I was preparing to get off on the left, the snow/ice was thick on minor roads. I was lucky and escaped with just a massive bruise over my right hip/buttock and damage to my shoulder. The pain/shock from that really shook me and I hobbled home, had a cup of tea before returning to work for the afternoon, the boss was intent on docking me half an hour! That would be only a fraction of what you felt & subsequently endured.

I still have remnants of the bruising even now so you've done excellently. Glad you're going to introduce the phone to a sim card, I take mine when out walking the dogs in case I fall in the ditch, the dogs take ill or the usual use - to ring home to request buckets of clean water in order to wash the dogs down after they've been in the ditch/rolled in stuff.

Hi quassleberry,

Yes I hope to maintain a decent amount of cycling - but I now have to incorporate other activities that promote healthy bone growth. It turns out that many keen cyclists have thinner than normal bones, and this obviously make a hip fracture much more likely. Being a non - weight bearing exercise, cycling does not put the right stresses on the body to produce strong, dense bone.

Today I rode half a mile to local woods, then walked for about an hour. By pushing the bike - and lifting it over the styles and obstacles, it felt like a decent workout - especially the final push up a very steep hillside. Tried jogging, but the hip quickly said no

Glad to hear that you didn't do any long - term damage when you fell. Has this put you off riding in these conditions ?
I wish I had been wearing some shorts with hip protection at the time - of course it's easy to slip into 'it will never happen to me' type thinking. I thought all those miles were helping - little did I realise that regular, intense cycling was actually thinning my bones !
