Ice in my bidon

I went out for 90 minutes on the fixed this morning. I've been off the bike for a couple of weeks with a chest infection/ache thingy, it's not quite gone yet but I was getting cabin fever!

I didn't look at the thermostat but realised it was a bit nippy seeing frost all over. Plus I could feel the chill through my Spec Radiant gloves (first time that's happened). It turned out to be a gorgeous ride, as the sky brightened and the sun rose.

To my surprise, when I was taking a sip of water I could hear something in my bidon! I could only think it was ice. Sure enough, get home and tip the remains into a glass and there it was - chunks of ice! That's another first for me. I didn't realise it was quite that cold out!

Try putting gin, tonic and a slice in your bidon!

Funny - I was going to start a similar thread. I've been out riding on the Somerset Levels this morning, and after 2 hours discovered I had ice in one of my water bottles. Not much but it was definitely ice.

I've only had that once before.

The thermal socks, layers of clothes, thermal gloves, and lots of hard pedalling couldn't keep up and I felt really cold by the time I got back.

Just having a cup of tea and letting my feet regain some feeling before going out again, on the other bike, to do some shopping. To paraphrase what's often said to me, "Must be mad in this weather, why don't I use the car?".

Went out about this time last year and both my bottles froze solid in an hour - and i mean SOLID, no liquid left at all. God knows what the temperature was but being well layers I was toastie.

You do realise that there's probably some calculation one could do to work out what temperature it would have been for that to happen? Where's jimbo when you need him!

I reckon though, at a rough approximation, 750ml of water to solid ice in a hour then it must have been... around about.... f*cking cold!

Conversely to this, i remember a few years ago, one hot hot summer, i put my bottle with juice in the freezer and let it get completely frozen. It was 32 or 33 degrees C...my drink was horribly warm in 30 minutes xx(

Mebbe it was a tad more than an hour, but this is a pic from the ride: 10 jan 2009 10:56 am Darkest Surrey
