I put my Schwalbes on this evening. No clearance issues and happy to see the temperature should be in the minus figures tomorrow. No ice forecast but a hard frost. Need to bed the tyres in tonight on way home anyway so plenty of time. A very distinct rumbling on way to the shed but I guess I'll get used to it. Will give initial verdict tomorrow. Stay safe out there everyone. Gez

We are getting a heat wave here in Canada, -8 today , will go up to 0 this afternoon and stay in that area for a while. I have not installed ice tires yet as the roads are not icy. I would prefer the temperature to stay closer to -10 this zero stuff make the road slippy and the people stupid. I will be looking for 700C spiked tires for my cross.

Don't forget ... some ice tyres can be fitted "the wrong way round" for better effect.

I've got my rear so the hooks dig into ice for acceleration, and the front so the hooks dig in under braking.
On dry roads i run at 60psi, on snow/ice down to 30psi.

It takes 3.5 hours to do 30 miles on the mtb at the moment ... where i could do it on the roady in 1h50mins.
So yea ... damn good workout. ;)

Our Winters in the UK are definitely on the milder side compared to elsewhere and still the country grinds to a standstill. We don't know how lucky we are.

No ice this morning, but as the bike was sat in the hall I came in on it. So wish 'some' dog owners would clear up after the dogs - massive 'poo' pile embedded in my tread and all over the rear stay. Splash guard stopped it going over me.

Just call me Chris...
No ice again and no frost, so out came the road bike for the trip into city centre with locks - didn't fancy those in a rucksack.

By contrast, despite the forecast, today was the first day that I've actually encountered ice! although we had a fair bit of sleet yesterday, the roads are still surprisingly dry but there are large icy patches on stretches of the country lanes.
First impressions (on ice) of the marathon Winters are that they're actually very effective...bloody hard work though!

Another positive is it feels great going back to normal tyres after a few sessions on the Winters.

Ive ridden a whopping total of 12 miles on my nice new Marathon Winter's today and achieved 2 things; massive pain in the front of my thighs (they are a far cry from 110psi 21mm slicks!), and have lost 6 studs from the rear tyre (although I have contact their UK website to get more).

Wouldn't bedding the studs in manually be better, which some pliers or a small hammer and a block of wood inside the tyre? Surely riding on them is just to make sure they are pushed into the casing properly; after all they are either in properly or they aren't.

On a positive note is sounds like I'm riding on crunchy ice/snow, which is fun, although I'm sure is a psychological ploy by Schwalbe on some level.

They state Winters need 40km on good quality dry tarmac with no sudden stopping or tight fast turns, apparently German tarmac is of a superior quality to UK tarmac.
