I hate talking to HMRC. They are quite happy to make wild unfounded allegations in writing, but will refuse point-blank from retracting them in writing, even though they are more than happy to do so over the phone.

So they repeat the allegations, and you have no evidence that they have accepted that they are not valid. So it all starts again.

Record the phone call.

I thought you meant payslips from the phantom employer!
Payslips from genuine employers - yes I have had them :okay:.
Ah, I see.
So the genuine one previously has used the correct code, until the tax office notified them of the new (higher) code.
It is then a recent change they made, not all is lost.
Does the genuine employer feature in the tax notice?
No matter, they will have to sort it, don't worry.

It's not been the best of mornings.
Take care: it's -2 here, plenty of ice about :hello:

Yep; I'm back! Looks as if it's about to start snowing here, and its bitter :cold: with a bit of a wind. I got to the end of my street before I realised the error of my ways. All in all, not great for cycling. Saturday looks better.

Maybe I should get my 2015/16 tax return done instead .

My guess would be some mix up with NI numbers, either a wrong number notified to HMRC, or a wrong number input by an operator. - The days of having someone specifically allocated to yours and several hundred others tax affairs disappeared long ago.
Always possible of course that another's number has been deliberately notified to HMRC to save emergency code or even OT being operated, but if that has happened I would have thought the company concerned are more likely not to bother with operating PAYE at all.
Keep all of your payslips. If HMRC for some reason ask for them to be sent, send copies not the originals as post is sent to PO boxes and may not arrive, in fact highly unlikely to arrive, at the workstation of the person you speak with, unless specifically addressed.
I would have thought not too difficult to sort out your side of things, although depending upon what information HMRC have been given, you might find them coming back with "Well according to our records you worked for [insert name here] transport.", in which case you then a little more information to challenge.

I've only had one muff up from the revenue, and to be fair once I got a human being on the blower it was sorted pretty smoothly. Hopefully yours will be too.

Perhaps your accountants can negotiate several billions off your tax each year like the Revenue let Vodafone do?
