Isn't that true of Kierin racing in Japan? All bikes are standard. I think it used to be true at least.

True I think, but during the British cycling dominance years, 2012 and for a good few years after IIRC, did the British cyclists then dominate kierin in the top levels in that time? If I'm thinking a good part of BC success is their set up and kit, well this standardised kit might have showed up as Brits not doing quite as well. They'd still have backroom staff advantage just not kit advantage I guess.

I'd be curious to know.

And in competitive curling, everyone has to use the same pads on the brushes when sweeping.
This was after 'Broomgate' in Canada a few years ago now, after one of the manufacturers developed a 'secret weapon' material and only supplied a few teams, automatically disadvantaging everyone else.
Or something.

I kid you not.

I know Chris Hoy competed in the Kierin in Japan as an invited foreigner for a while, earlier in his career. I think it was a TV program about that where I learned about the standard bikes.

I like the idea personally of taking away the advantages of better kit, car or bike in sport. Imagine if F1 had all the cars set up the same way so the best driver wins not the best team. Is Veratappen really a lot better than those drivers in the minor teams who make the numbers up?

Were British cyclists really that much better than cyclists from other nations during all those highly successful years when they had the best backroom team and kit that money could buy?

They did that in motorbike racing, the Yamaha ProAm series, 350LC's with the riders drawing the keys out of a 'hat' and all bikes identical serviced by Yamaha..................It was a crashfest but quite a few good riders came out of it including Niall McKenzie, Alan Carter, 'Smutty' Robinson and a bunch more. Standard Bikes on Standard (Sport) road tyres.
There was at least one round with Bazza in the commentary box and when asked if he'd like a go at it said "Not on your nelly"

Kung Fu - all participants must speak English, but with their lips out of sync to make it look like it has been overdubbed from Cantonese.

Golf - an additional round to be included on the morning of final day of all the major championships. To be held on the local crazy/miniature golf course and only using the standard putter & balls from the bucket by the pay kiosk.

Cricket - all games to be reduced to one over matches with each over being one ball long. Saves a whole lot of tedium.

Golf, players have to down a pint of bitter before teeing off at each hole, no leaving the course for a pee allowed.

When in America, the fans can shout "down the hole" as the pint is being necked.
