It would seem like you have found the villages old sewage works.. I think that at some time the village has been connected to a much larger system elsewhere.

All that sewage is now being piped up to Blackpool and pumped into the sea.

Look for copious amounts of tomato plants too...

Some of the tastiest tomatoes that I've ever eaten were harvested from Knowsthorpe sewage works in Leeds. I spent an idyllic summer working there when I was between completing my PGCE course and taking up my first teaching post.

In a similar vein, the reason why you often find clumps of stinging nettles alongside bridleways and paths is because of the nitrate-rich soil, thanks to generations of working men stopping for a tinkle on their way home from the pub.

Perhaps we should remove the stinging nettles, and replace them with tomatoes.
