Would you prefer your real name to be by the avatar, or are you happy with your internet personna. Does it give you liberty, or make you behave in a certain way that might not necessarily apply in real life - whatever 'real life' might be?
I can understand that if you have a victorian name like, say, Richard or Edward - you may have a valid reason for picking something fanciful.
I am two completely different characters on and off this forum  , but if I was shouldered with some responsibility, like Admin for instance, I might think long and hard about such things...

My CC name is my stage / pen name that I have used for so many years a lot of folk have no idea that it isn't my real name, so I guess it's working well.

P.S it is very easy to find out my real name thanks to a very brief but ill-advised period of trying to grow up and write under my real name...

I think the CC names are fun. A hundred and more people on this forum know my real name by virtue of having been on the rides, but I'm as happy to be called by one as by the other.

On the other hand......I think it's essential to use one's own photograph. It helps if you look uncannily like supersexy French film star Jean-Louis Trantingnant.

My pseudonym was the trading name for my business and I quite enjoy using it.

Anyone wanting to know who I really am can find out very easily using a bit of Google-fu.... or even simpler, by following the homepage link on my profile page:whistle:.

I feel an online name protects you from the loonies.

I worked at one time in a call centre where we we supposed to give our full name and Team leader's name to any caller who asked for them, we routinely used our first names in our call introduction.

I got one caller who wanted to rewrite the contract he has signed. When told he couldn't and could either leave and pay a penalty fee or run his contract out he asked for my name. I gave it and got a torrent of racial abuse. As I'm white Norman English this was way off the mark. He ended his call with threats to hunt my brown *rs* down and kill me. NICE!

While I'm sure that 99.99% of CCers are not like that, I'd not be happy giving out my real name.
