In defence of Goto10 - he was some way behind the other cyclist so he would have had to take primary very early to hold the taxi and probably taken some stick - but letting that go there wasn't enough space and time to take primary between the taxi and lorry safely.

With hindsight I agree he should have gone with the other cyclist. But that also requires a clearer understanding of the position behind when there are enough distraction in front. I would probably have got into the same position and regretted it too.

Interesting to note this was one of these 7½ tonners that is effectively a lorry but can be driven with a car licence, I often find this class of vehicle being driven aggressively and badly.

I'm trying to take primary more often - I've found that I'm a lot more assertive when on my hybrid but I can easily do 20~30mph on that, being on a Brompton seems to annoy drivers (foldups *look* really slow!)

Having ridden the Boris bikes in addition to my own hybrid I noticed a big difference in "being part of the traffic." While I'm not the fastest thing around I feel I can keep up with the cars with my hybrid and therefore I'm much more assertive. However with the rental bikes I just can't - nor wouldn't even try - go nearly as fast or accelerate as quickly and I know I'm holding up the cars, and feeling bad about it, so I tend to try to be away from the traffic as long as it feels safe rather than stay with it - simply because it's impossible. If the vast majority of people not cycling today feel anything like I do when doing 10mph in 20+mph traffic I understand perfectly why they're not cycling.

Just a question - why would the rider looking behind them in such a case have prevented that?

It doesn't really fully answer your question but with some people it just makes a connection, makes them consider the human being ahead but the dilemma is with other muppets it just confirms in their peanut brain that you've seen them and will swerve out of their way!
