Im curious too,but at a guess,i would say its for stiffer riding,in races possibly,or a more giving ride for touring,like i said,just a guesss:smile:

Typically longer wheelbase and more relaxed steering rake. This makes a touring bike less nervous compared to your average road bike (steering isn't as sharp).

Also long chainstays stop you clipping the panniers with your heels
