I used to be a mod here. It wasn't much fun. I have plenty of respect for those who have the energy and the patience for it... and the last thing I want to worry about is how the forum is run, when it works well.

That said, I'd be interested to see how a whole different range of people would run the forum (on a purely experimental basis, of course)... abitrary (would depend on the time since the pubs closed), nickm (probably wouldn't be many people left alive...), dellzeqq (a purely aesthetic approach), Greedo (compulsory Benny Hill-a-thon?), Dayvo (the decadence, the violence, the terror - can you imagine?...)

Although each mod does have, as you put it, the power of greyskull, it's not actually that exciting. The only time anyone takes unilateral action is to deal with spam - for anything contentious, there is debate before action is decided on, and Admin is always a key feature in that debate. He is after all, boss.

Perhaps the fairest way is for members to volunteer to be a mod and submit a c/v in the same way as applying for a job. Then the c/v's could be sifted by existing mods, and Shaun (genuflect) of course by reference to the c/v and past posts. That way, the members who think they could do the job get the chance to prove it. However, the members should then have the right to dismiss a mod who can't cut it. (Not Shaun of course).
