You could hire a car and throw your bike in the back. Small hatch would do i should think?

Or take the train and cycle to the start.

(Or get a Brompton and take the bus:tongue:)

I've had a bike in the back of a hire car. 'Seasy.
Any medium size hatch (say, a Focus / Astra / Megane / Golf) will take a bike with the front wheel off. Just fold the back seats down.

You should see some of the stuff I've seen in a hire car for work.

Just make sure you go over it carefully before signing, and return it in the dark when it's raining.

Keep your own bike rack, and fit it to the hire car? (probably better check it allowed....).

If you are seriously thinking of ditching the car, find out if there's a car club scheme near you... For a membership fee, you can book a car within minutes and pick it up from set points.

For example:

(although that seems to be England only...)

My car is rubbish. I'm going to get rid of it as it doesn't go and I have cancelled the insurance. Hire cars sound like a good option and far cheaper for the car mileage we do. (I've a van for big stuff).

Thanks folk at the moment my car doesn't cost me much (I had it since 98) it was new in 97 (ex courtesy car) other than Road Tax VED, limited mileage insurance, limited petrol and MOT but if gets costly I think I'll scrap it, it only moves about once a fortnight or less. I had always thought bikes in the back of a hire car was a no, no but it doesn't seem to be, that looks like the way to go.

Edit: oh as arch says there a city car club, I'll have to look into the one here.

What a hire car company does not know will not harm them is my theory  especially when I am using them for work - what do you mean that was a 4 wheel drive track???

I think there is a car club in Edinburgh but not sure of any details.

if you are going to scrap your car don't give it away for nothing.

I phoned a local metal /car scrap bod last week to remove my Mondeo which had died and he gave me £60.00 for the scrap .:ohmy::ohmy:

I'd have given him my neighbour's car too had I known

Check out the Edinburgh Car Club - we were seriously tempted. The economics of it are good if you do not use the car all the time.

indeed, hire car companies only care if there is damage to it.

a bit of old sock or whatever to protect the paint from the bike rack's straps and they will never know (unless you forget to take it off.)

Since the car's over 10 years old, can you sell it to someone with a car less than 10 years old who wants a new car? Say 500 quid; they get £1000 scrap discount on their new car (saving them money) and you get a lot more than £60. Or are there rules against that sort of thing?
