Yeah, it's your fault.

This happened to me but the person drove off. I think that she was probably too embarrassed to stop.

Wear a hypothetical helmet cam and post the video on a hypothetical cycling site and you would be given hypothetical bullshit advice.

Ive hit the back of a car once on the bike, whilst on a club run; we were just about two groups with me at the head of the second chasing back to close the gap on the downhill, when a car decides to overtake but another car was coming head on so they, swerved into the gap and slammed on the brakes. There was a wee dent in their boot but not a mark on me or the bike and tbh I doubted I'd even touched the car but I gave them my details as technically I hadn't provided adequate stopping distance. etc; surprise, surprise they never came back to me however.

Well in your case HLaB I'd not think you were at fault. Whilst it's normally the followers fault for not leaving enough room the gap they swung into was enough room before they squidged in.

That's assuming they swung in and braked at the same time/very shortly afterwards. If they'd left enough time for you to slow and make a large enough gap and you hadn't it might be different.

of course you are at fault (hypothetically)

You failed to ride within a safe stopping distance and failed to anticipate the potiential for a vehicle to have to stop suddenly (stalling or not).

However, in practice its something we probably all do wrong every day.

I came off my motorbike because a cyclist jumped a red and caused me to undertake an emmergency stop whilst in mid turn. Unfortunately I hit a manhole cover a slid a good 20 feet.

But it was my fault for not anticipating a red light jump and approaching the turn with enough caution.

I did this pulling away from traffic lights a couple of weeks ago. There was one car in front of me, the lights went green we both started to move, I did a quick shoulder check and before you know it I hit their bumper as they had stalled. I was going ever so slowly when it happened, I then stopped but I assume they didn't even notice as they then carried on.
